Dad's Parking Ticket

I took this picture the last day we were in Belgium. Dad is still there working and is supposed to come home tomorrow.

Waffle Video

Here is the video of me eating my first Belgian Waffle. It was good, not as good as the one in Ghent, and the next day I was sicker than a dog. Not certain it was the waffle but was a pretty big coincidence. It was kind of funny though that I was so determined to find a Belgian Waffle and then got sick the next day.

Flight of Misery

We are finally back in Michigan after an absolutely miserable flight. Eight hours in a plane packed wall to wall with Italians. They were just horrible. Walking all over, yelling at each other across the plane, screaming Italian babies, etc. I've never been so happy to see the filthy city of Detroit in all my life.

Grandma's green card paperwork took a little extra time but we should be home before midnight at least. I can't wait to sleep in my bed and cuddle my puppies!

The Better Belgian Waffle

Mom's Waffle

Ghent

We toured castle Gravensteen which was right in town. We all really enjoyed it. The small spiral staircases frightened me a bit. There was 15 points of interest in the castle including an armory showing armor and weapons, a torture chamber with medieval devices, and descriptions of all the things the building has been used for throughout the centuries. A lot of pictures of this has been added to my Flickr account.

We then walked along the streets and visited the Friday Market where there were a lot of little tent shops set up in the square.

We had a little bit of trouble finding the car again. The tom-tom didn't really work very well in Ghent for some reason. So we walked and walked and walked and eventually it did take us to it but we're all pretty much pooped now.

Paris on Valentine's Day

Eiffel Tower

We drove the 3 hours down to Paris. The traffic in town is just absolutely insane. There are basically no rules. People dart in an out as they please and ignore or follow traffic lights as it suits them. The worst was the motorcycles zooming past and basically using the dotted middle line as their own personal lane. It was enough to freak me out.

We made it there and took some great pictures. I'll have some more up on my Flickr account soon. We went to the second level of the Eiffel Tower and had a great view of the city. They had little gift shops inside and we bought a few things and then mom and grandma got us some real french fries.

Unfortunately as we left, Grandma noticed her billfold had been pickpocketed. Her Green Card to get back into the U.S. (as well as all her cash and credit card) was gone with it. Luckily she had he passport in a separate pouch. People at the Eiffel Tower were so pathetically unhelpful it was disgusting.

The security points us to a man, who points us to a police sign near the tower. We go there and he says we have to go to another police station and writes some imaginary landmarks for Grandma to follow. Dodge and I walk back to the car and mom and grandma go looking for the police station. After walking all over and asking several people for the police station they come back to the car. I then set up the Tom-Tom GPS device to take us to the closest police station and we were able to get grandma in to report her loss and get some paperwork to help her get back into the States.

It was a really wonderful day and cool experience until the pickpocketing experience. It ended on another rather sour note when Dodge accidently scraped the bumper of the rental car when pulling into the hotel parking lot. It sounds like a whole lot of bad and I really wanted it to be nice for mom. I hope she at least had a good time before everything went to hell in a handbasket.

Finally! A Belgian Waffle!

Dodge Sausage Wrap
Originally uploaded by Jamie Howell
We went shopping downtown Koksijde today and I went into every bakery looking for a Belgian waffle. One of my goals was try the official Belgian waffle. I struck out. We stopped in a little grocery store, sorta like Aldi's back home and I bought a pack of packaged waffles figuring it was the closest I was going to get.

This afternoon we went back out and found a little bakery that had the cutest little mini donuts that I could see from the window. I went in to get me a mini donut and Dodge wanted this sausage wrapped in a croissant thing. I go in and there on the counter are freshly baked Belgian waffles. I bought one and got Dodge his sausage baked thingy (which was pretty tasty). Mom got a waffle too and Grandma got some apple turnover things.

The waffle was more cake like than our waffles, like a cakey donut and had a sugar glaze on top. Was pretty stinking good and I'm guessing very bad for you because I could almost feel all the butter or oils or whatever was used coating my mouth. Anyway this is officially checked off the to-do list!

The Shady Bistro

We spent the day walking around Brugge. We stopped in a chocolate shop, watched them make chocolate easter bunnies and then Grandma bought us some truffles. They were yummy! Mom was in heaven with white chocolate truffles and a bag of marzipan.

We stopped in a local bar and got a beer which was delicious and asked where we could find some supper. Everyone we asked suggested the Waterwheel and gave us directions there but the restaurant was closed. So we ended up driving all around and found this little restaurant quite by accident. We were just happy to find an open restaurant. The closer we walked up to it and read the name "The Shady" we were starting to have doubts but we went inside anyway.

The bartender/cook was a super friendly woman who spoke English well. Her menu was only in Flemmish but she translated it all for us. I told her I wanted to try a traditional Belgian dinner and she suggested the Flemmish Stew. So I got that and it was very good. Dodge went with what she said was also traditional, eel. He liked it. Mom got a chicken mushroom dish that was very good and Grandma had fresh salmon. Everything was served with french fries and a big bowl of homemade mayonaise.

With a happy full belly we returned to our castle. Sampled a few more local beers from the fridge and then sleep peacefully.

Castle

Well yesterdays flight and then lost luggage totally stunk. Today we arrived in the castle in Brugges and it so makes up for all that junk. The grounds are nice, we have great rooms and the castle is awesome! More pictures of this will be be posted on my flickr account later.

Word of the Day

Everyday I put up on our section's whiteboard a new word of the day to
try and enhance our vocabulary. That's sort if true, mostly Matt and I
take the words and decide what it really sounds like. Anyway since
I'll be gone a week and a half I left this word of the day for them to
find Monday morning.

Snow

Picture of my back porch before leaving for work this morning.

Worst. Day. Ever.

Yesterday afternoon we started having a full on blizzard. It was so bad that my boss came out at 4:00 and said we could all go home before things get any worse. I was super happy that I was getting to go home an hour early and started planning what I was going to do with the extra time.

I went out to my car in the far out parking lot and all bundled up proceeded to remove the several inches of snow already on it. I get in my car and start it up ready to go and see that my gloves are totally covered in snow. I decide to take them off and lay them on the floor in the passenger seat to dry while I drive home. I then reach out for the door handle to close the car door and in an instant my wedding ring slips from my finger and plummets into the snow below.

I honestly thought, "No big deal I saw it fall, it's right here." I scoop into where I thought I saw it fall... it's not there. I scoop again, still nothing. I put my gloves back on and get out to take a better look at the area. Several passes and I still don't see the ring. This is where I start to panic.
Now I'm on my hands and knees in the snow carefully shifting around the snow pile knowing it just has to be here somewhere. I am all systematic about it using the scraper end of my car scraper to portion off an area and look through it. Searching for many minutes and not finding anything I do the only thing I can do; completely go hysterical.

I call up Dodge and let him know what happened. He makes a plan to drive all the way to Lansing from Ann Arbor (in a blizzard!) to help me. He suggests going to the security guard in my building in case they have something to help me.

I walk up to the security desk looking a positive mess. By this time I've spent a good 25 minutes digging in snow and 5 minutes crying so my hair is so full of snow I look like a yeti from the wild and my make-up has run all over my face. Anyway the security guard doesn't help a lick. I finally ask if there's any salt I can use thinking if I melt away the snow, all that will be left is my ring! She points me to a big garbage can of salt and says I'm free to use it.

There's a nasty rusty old coffee can in the garbage bin and I fill it up and take it to the spot. In all this time it's still snowing like crazy and my little area is starting to fill in. I figure it wasn't a big deal, shortly all the snow would be gone. I sprinkle it around and sit in my car to wait for the salt to do it's magic. I take the time to call mom and see what she has to say. Her suggestion is to try hot water and melt the snow that way. She also offers to come help but it seriously is horrible outside and I wasn't thrilled about Dodge driving all that way already. Dodge calls me back saying he called the Wal-Mart near my office and they had a metal detector. He was going to pick up the metal detector and come help me.

I come out to look at my excavation area and the salt seemed to do well. Snow was definitely receding so I dig around a little more. Still nothing. I pick up the coffee can and head all the way back to the building for a try at mom's hot water idea. I return and see the salt area already coated with fresh snow. I slowly pour out the water like mom instructed me to because we didn't want the ring to wash away somewhere. It worked great. Immediately all the snow disappeared showing the pavement below. Only problem is, still no ring. So I return to get more hot water, but before leaving set up my umbrella over the area trying to prevent some of the accumulating snow falling on the area.

On my second trip up to get some water I call Alan thinking, if anybody has a metal detector lying around, he would be the guy. No luck with that and I lost his call as I walked into the building. It's after 5 by now so I have to use my after hours access to get inside. I think to myself how sad it was that of all the people in this building, only one woman stopped to ask if the girl sobbing in the parking lot needed assistance.

I return and try a larger area with the water. Still no luck. At this point, I don't think I could truly express my despair. I thought my ring was lost forever. I was completely soaked from my digging in the snow and frozen to the bone. As I later explained to Alan, I seriously thought "I am so cold, I'm going to die". On top of this there was a blizzard dumping huge amounts of snow the longer I hung around and I live 50 miles away from work.

Dodge calls again and I tell him through my tears how distraught I was. He tells me just to sit in the car and stay warm. He's coming though it will probably take several hours and we can find the ring with the metal detector. I honestly didn't know what else to possibly do. Nothing I've done has returned any results other than to get me colder and wetter.

I get back in my car ready to just sit and wait and hope I had enough gas to keep me warm until Dodge could arrive. Just on a complete whim, I open the car door again and happened to look in the right direction at the proper angle and through a tiny tiny hole in the snow I see the tip of my ring peeking out. I reached out and grabbed it and not 2 seconds after my ring was back on my finger Mom called wanting a status and asking if Grandpa should come out and help me. I tell her the good news and then call Dodge to stop him from his journey to Lansing.

In my great excitement I forgot to put the rusty coffee can where I found it but oh well. I was so overjoyed that I found it. And it only took an hour and a half... :P
