Christmas 2008

Dodge Handing Me a Gift
Originally uploaded by Jamie Howell

We had a very nice Christmas this year with my family at Mom's house. Mom made a delicious turkey dinner and after opening gifts we watched a couple movies while Mom made empanadas for a snack.

Dodge's parents sent us some very nice gifts. The cookie racks were very much needed and I have a new recipe I want to try in the dutch oven.

Photos from Christmas have been posted to my Flickr account! Take a look!

Pooping Toy Collection

Here is a photo of my growing "Pooping Toy" collection. Technically only 2 of these items are mine. Dodge is the proud owner of the reindeer and polar bear but he's really ok we me keeping our poop in a group at my desk at work.

It started three years ago when I got Matt's gift in the work gift exchange. A pooping santa and some other little gag gifts. Lovely. It was last year's Christmas that I got the pooping snowman from Matt to add to my collection. Very funny joke, Matt. How did you know I needed more pooping toys?

Also last year my sister, Christy, had purchased a pooping reindeer for Dodge. She was unaware of my other toys which made it even funnier. Our family is cursed to collect pooping items!

This year our work decided to skip the gift exchange. Matt was relieved because he didn't think he could find any more pooping toys for me. However, Christy did not disappoint us by finding Dodge a Poo-lar Bear. I'm keeping it in the packaging. I don't want to ruin it's value by playing with it.

I've brought all the pooing toys to work so they can all hang out happily on my toy shelf together. The santa and snowman candies are long gone but today I realized the reindeer still has some poop left in him. The brown jelly beans look very old and nasty (fossilized poo?) so I don't think I'll be tempted into eating it.

We're all very excited. Now we can focus on baby girl names. We will hold out on buying girl baby items until next month's ultrasound when we can verify the gender for certain.

Fun Gift!

We went to Ed and Misty's on Saturday and we had a little gift exchange. I got an origami calendar! Pretty neat, huh! Pictures of some of the folks (mostly people's adorable kids) can be found in my Flickr. It was nice to see Nathan and Kim all the way from Poland! Before he complains; yes I was happy to see you too, Alan.

I brought my new calendar to work because I thought Matt might enjoy doing the origami, too. He's out sick today but it starts in January anyway so it's no rush.

Since I did bring it to work and we're not here January 1st, I did the first origami to try it out. Check out my sweet dove! Yeah, I'm pretty much an origami master now.

My Kindle's Broked!

Dodge got me a Kindle for Christmas this year and yes I've already opened it. To be fair, he opened his first (I had bought him one, too). I only wanted mine after seeing him use his for a few days. I was trying to hold out for Christmas!

It's a really neat book reader. I purchased some books and can read any of them on the go without having to haul novels around with me. It's pretty spiffy!

The problem is that ever since registering it on Amazon, it has not connected back to Whispernet, the wireless connection through Sprint the device has. That means I can't browse the Amazon store or wirelessly purchase any other books with the device. I can buy ebooks online and transfer them to the kindle with a USB cable so I'm not completely unable to get books. However, part of the coolness of the book is being able to browse and get books on the fly without your computer.

I spent some time on the phone this morning with Amazon Kindle Support. The good news is that the guy on the phone really didn't know what to do with me. Makes it feel like this isn't a wide spread problem with the device. He had me try resetting it and verifying the registration of the device. He checked the signal for the Whispernet service in both my home and work locations and says that shouldn't be any problem. He tried for me to get the diagnostics from the kindle but the command he gave me brought up a blank page.

So we're going to have to exchange my kindle for a new one because the wireless device in this one is just plain broke. The bad news is that Amazon is completely sold out of kindles. He said they show the next shipment to arrive in March. March! Gah!

Since I can use the kindle still to read my books he said to just keep it for now and he'll hold off sending me the shipping lables until they have some in stock to swap with me. That way I can continue to use my kindle instead of just watching Dodge use his for 3 months.

Matt's Cube Decorating Plans

Matt's latest project is turning his little cubicle into a warm and inviting place to spend his eight hours a day.

He has started simply by purchasing a bear skin rug for the floor of his cube.

"The bear was actually much bigger, the hide just shrunk in the wash.", was what he told me when I asked him about it.

It has added a nice bit of character to his space. It's also convenient as it has a squeaker located in the head of the bear that we've been instructed to use as his new doorbell.

Matt's further cubicle enhancement project plans includes adding a small fireplace as well as getting a smoking jacket and pipe. Doesn't that sound nice!

Until he finishes his project he will just sit comfortably and enjoy the wonderful ambiance his new rug brings to his cube.

I Can Haz Signal!

Since I've moved to our current building, (ohhh maybe 5 or so years ago) I've had zero cell phone service while inside. I dunno. It's some sort of anti-cell-signal eater building.

It was annoying to try to train people to just call my work phone to reach me while at work. Some people felt awkward about calling my desk phone and I guess hearing my "professional" voice answer instead of just calling my cell. My brother has been an exceptionally slow study in this task. On the plus side, annoying sales calls or head hunter contacts automatically get shuffled to voicemail without me ever knowing they called.

I had pretty much resigned to my fate that my cell phone was darn near useless once I entered this building. It was irritating (especially when trying to post something about Matt) but it wasn't crushing my soul or anything. Besides I could still use it as an ipod for music so it wasn't a total waste to continue to carry it.

Last week I noticed a strange device on the ceiling here at work only about a cube away from mine. It looked like a small pop can sized traffic cone. It was all white and stuck to the ceiling upside down. I stared at it for a while. Asked Matt what it was. He stared too. No one was sure. We guessed maybe work was getting with the new century and giving us wi-fi. I picked up my iphone and searched for a signal with no luck. Shucks.

Today though I noticed that my cell phone actually buzzed when Ed sent me a text about this weekend. Activity from my phone at work? How odd! I checked it and wonder of wonders I had a full 5 bars of signal and connection to the Edge network!

It's a miracle and I'm very happy! Thank you work people that decided we needed this!

Skunked Again!

Today was a work Christmas Pot Luck / Party. It was a lot of fun with a ton of food and little fun games. This is a picture of some of the few items left after everyone had eaten. I didn't bring my phone with me to get a picture of it before hand.

They secretly stole some items from people's desks and we had to guess who's it was. I did horribly. There was a game of "Family Feud" where we had to guess some top answers from a survey that was handed out to everyone. My team lost big time. Then we did a story game passing presents around. Karen next to me got a gift certificate for a pizza from a local restaurant. The lady on the other side of me got a gas card. I open my envelop and found a piece of paper that said "Happy Holidays" on it. Bleh.

Now my belly is full and I still have a couple of hours of work left that I have to keep my eyes open. Lets hope I can do it!

Snow!

We woke up to quite a bit of snow this morning. Most if not all the local area schools were closed. Our street had a large tree down in the middle of the road for some reason as well. It must be a pretty heavy snow.

It's still snowing and according to the weather man this morning is likely to continue until this afternoon. The main roadways were pretty clear and I had no trouble getting to work though.

New Carpeting in the Baby's Room

Today we had carpeting installed in what will be the baby's room. It looks really nice! The carpeting is a baby gift from my Aunt Janet and her boyfriend, who came and installed it. The room looks so much nicer than the painted pink hardwood flooring that was there.

The puppies are not allowed in this room now and aren't handling it well because it previously held their crates. We haven't found a permanent place for the crates yet. We're working on it.

New Car

Yesterday Dodge and I drove out to Farmington Hills and we traded in my Mercedes for a mini van. Yup, I guess I'm officially all old now. To be fair, it is a really nice mini van. We got the new VW Routan. The "don't have a baby for german engineering" van. We're really excited with all the neat features and all the room we now have. Mom loves the color and so do I.

I drove it out to Ed's and he pulled his old bus next to it so we could take this picture.

Halloween

Here are 2 of my cousins, Becky & Suzie, out trick or treating.

Happy Halloween!

Our boss wanted us all to dress up for Halloween. Since later we found out she wouldn't be in due to her Father visiting we all said poo on that idea. Our new student Craig wasn't sure whether we really weren't dressing up or were just tricking him into not dressing up while we all did. To be safe, he brought a costume to work today just in case.

Since he had it, I had him put it on so I could take a picture. We'll send it to the boss so he gets brownie points.

Ultrasound Pictures!

Today I had my second doctor visit. We got to listen to the heartbeat and had a few pictures taken. If you'd like to see them all visit the baby blog and take a look! They gave us a new due date of May 10th while we were there so I was about a week behind what I originally thought. Seeing the little baby was really exciting for both of us!

Arts & Crafts with Matt

Today on Arts & Crafts with Matt, Matt shows us how to reuse past projects to make new things of beauty.

He reused our tin can star project from several months ago to make a beautiful flower. He reused the paper star template for the inner petals and turned the star upside down for the outer petals. A little yellow paperclip provides the stem and some green paper finishes the look for a nice natural looking leaf.

Matt says about his creation, "It smells like the rain forest. And aluminum." He wants to make sure that everyone takes some time to smell the flowers today.

Matt's Steak Recipe

Today on Cooking with Matt he shares "Matt's Bad-Ass Good-As-Shit Steak" recipe. This is a picture of him pretending to draw it on the board left handed because he didn't want to just stand and let me snap a picture. Once again the recipe is drawn as a picture so follow along.

  1. Take a large bowl and fill it with 1 cup of Worcestershire Sauce, 1 cup of Italian dressing, 1 tbsp lemon juice and 2 tbsp soy sauce.
  2. To the bowl add 1 cup of water and your 2 steaks. Let it sit for 4 hours.
  3. Rub on your spicy seasoning to your steak and stick on the grill for 10 minutes on each side.
  4. Eat the bad ass shit out of it.

Thank you, Matt!

Student Assistants

Everyone meet Craig. Craig is a new student assistant here at work that I get to torture teach.

Today we're celebrating Jerry's birthday at work so we have food goodies we brought in. Lately we've noticed food poachers that come and take our food even though they don't belong to our group. I have assigned Craig to watch the food table and bite anyone who comes close. Matt suggested if anyone does sneak a bite to tackle them and make them spit the food out.

Craig's on top of it. I told him to show me a menacing face for this picture. I guess that's the best he can do.

Gross!

It's too small to read but the cap on my Snapple says:

"The average human eats 8 spiders in his/her lifetime while sleeping."

As if my tummy wasn't feeling squeamish enough. Now I'm thinking about eating spiders and I'm associating spiders with my Snapple.

I think I'm going to go get myself a glass of water to drink with my lunch.

Trying Scrapblog

Mom sent me the link to scrapblog.com today so I gave it a quick try with some Belgium photos. It lets me connect right to flickr so that was pretty cool. If it posts on here easy it might be a fun and easy way to do some digital scrapbooks.

New Baby Site

Since my mind is going to be preoccupied for the upcoming months, I decided to split my random crap and baby ramblings into two separate blogs. This site will continue to contain random crap about our life. Probably big events like ultrasound pictures and such I'll share here but other than that I'll keep my crazy pregger rantings off of here.

Since Dodge's parents live so far away, I thought a site for them to keep up-to-date with the goings on might be something they enjoy. So I have created just that. If you actually are interested in the baby information, you are certainly welcome to view it as well.

Matt & zee Calculator

Today Matt took some time to impress me with his calculator spelling skills. He started slow and simple for me in case I didn't catch on. Messages like "hello" and "hi boss".

I then challenged him to make a complete sentence.

He sat figuring out all the letters he could get out of the calculator and pondered the sentence he could make. He finally came up with "I see hogs" (pictured above).

Actually his first one used a 2 instead of a 5 for the "s" in see so it looked like "I zee hogs". When I asked him about it, he said he was being even fancier and spelling it with a french accent.

First Doctor Visit

Dodge wasn't able to afford any time off work so Mom came with me to my first appointment today. I just spent time with the nurse. Giving her our medical history and getting the basics of what pregnancy means. They took like 6 dang tubes of blood and I had to pee in a cup. Mom says to get used to peeing in a cup as I'll do it every time I visit now. I made my appointment for next month and got my prenatal vitamin prescription.

The estimated due date we were given was May 4, 2009. Seems so far away!

When we got out mom handed me a little bag. She said she's had it for over a week already but she was out of town last week. We got love grandma and grandpa onsies and an organizer! Mom knows how I love organizers! This is the first official gift we've gotten so I had to take a picture of it.

Thanks Mom!

Tracker

I see the doctor for my first visit on Thursday but patience has never been one of my strong suits. I've checked parenting web sites trying to figure out an estimated due date and other baby information.

Today I bought a pregnancy tracker app from iTunes for my phone. $2 for a quick look of how far along things are. Like I wouldn't know anyway but eh it wasn't that expensive.

When the doctor gives me his estimated due date, I can enter that in and follow it according to that timeline. Right now it's just estimating based on my last period.

The Culprit

See? It's not even that burnt!

Excitement!

Today we had a visit from the local Fire Department, Police Department, and Security Office. Why? Well, because someone toasted a bagel which set off the fire alarm in the building. The person who toasted the bagel didn't even burn it that badly. In fact, I'll post a picture of it afterwards. However, nevertheless they claimed the bagel set off the fire alarm causing everyone in the building to evacuate. It was interesting to see the response to a suspected fire.

First a single security personelle enters the building, by himself. Then a police officer enters the building, by himself. Then a firement enters the building, by himself. Apparently these three then join together to form Captain Planet and extinguish the fire.

Anyway, just a bit of excitement to start the day.

2nd Anniversary

Dodge and I celebrate our second anniversary today. He came home with flowers and cards for me. Since it is Wednesday and we both have to work tomorrow, we decided to just go out to dinner and then came home to watch a movie. Nothing big but still nice.

Shelfari

I heard about this social networking site on Good Morning America this morning because it was bought by Amazon. My tech podcast also mentioned it so I decided to check it out.

It is called Shelfari and is a site that allows you to create a profile, add books you’ve read, currently reading and plan to read. You can comment and rate books you’ve read, create book groups and share your reading list with friends.

Ok, mini rant here so skip a few paragraphs if you don’t want to hear it.

I personally hate most social networking sites. I’ll set up accounts and then after initial set up will not return there unless told by my friend “you never answered my message!” or “Why won’t you accept me as your friend!” It’s not that I’m not friendly. I just think these sites are a waste-o-freaking time.

They allow people to put up 8 million flashing seizure inducing pictures, 17 movies, 3000 quizzes, music that starts automatically (most of which I do not like) and don’t forget the deluge of application spam. Add that with the fact that the one time I possibly would look at such sites (like during lunch hour at work because I already ate my sammich and have time to kill), the site is blocked.

I dislike them greatly so be forewarned that contacting me through such sites is probably the worst way to do so. I have email, phone, im accounts and can receive texts. Heck I’m even a regular twitter user! Any / all of those will garner a response from me. A myspace bulletin inviting me to your party, will go unnoticed.

That little rant aside, Shelfari looks to be like a service I could possibly dig. I’m an avid reader and always looking for book suggestions. This will let me see what my friends are reading and if they enjoyed the book. Since it is now tied with Amazon I can easily click and buy the book for myself.

Not saying I’ll be there every day because it’s obviously not that interesting. It is still a step above other social networking sites in the fact that I actually plan on returning.

If you have an account and want to share your book lists with me, you can find my profile at http://www.shelfari.com/jamiehowell

Ren Festival

While Dodge is at an all day bachelor party, I am at the ren festival with the Detriot crew. Sharon bought this huge staff from a guy at the pub. It's cool looking!

Dan told me that Jack Black is going to be at the Holly Ren Festival on September 13 and 14th shooting a movie. We are totally coming back that weekend.

After the ren festival we went to Buca's for dinner and then back to Sharon's house to relax in the hot tub, drink some beers, play some cards and watch the Olympics. Was a very long day but was a lot of fun.

Italian Day

Today we had "Italian Day" at work since our boss is Italian and she invited some people we work with from downstairs to come have lunch with us. We all had to bring in Italian food. Well what the frick do I know about Italian food so I made these pizza bite things. Ghetto Italian!

That's a picture of Shankar helping himself to panna cotta, or what we affectionately called "Boob Pudding" due to it's shape. It was really tasty.

We played a game where we had to guess things about Italy. I ended up winning and now am proudly displaying my "Italian Day 2008 Guessing Game Winner" certificate. How I won, I'm not sure. The guys were picking on me for my answers.

The biggest news of the day though was:

I ATE TOMATOES AND LIKED IT.

One of the guys from downstairs brought a crusty Italian bread that he rubbed with garlic and then a bowl of mozzarella, basil and tomatoes to put on top for a bruschetta. Honestly the pot was mostly tomatoes and I must of looked a bit woeful as I knew I was going to have to try some so the dude didn't feel bad.

I ate the crap out of it. In fact, I went back for seconds. I explained to him how I dislike tomatoes and that I consider them evil but I really liked his bruschetta (meaning it as a compliment). He was a bit of a smartypantsknowitall and explained that the roma tomatoes he used was why I liked it because of the diddlingdo and the doodlyblah. I didn't listen too hard.

So there you have it. Proof that all tomatoes are not the devil. Just most of them.

Trisha's Bachelorette Party

Trisha's bachelorette party was a bunch of fun. We started out at Trippers and went to the Whisky Barrel. The Whisky Barrel was a little odd. Those folks would line dance to absolutely anything. Country western, dance music, beastie boys. They weren't picky. A lot of cowboy hats though so I was happy.

I took a lot of pictures but not all of them are appropriate for public viewing so it's a private set on my Flickr account. I sent it to Trisha so she can share them if she chooses to.

Iron Chef Matt

Today Matt impresses me with his cooking skills. He made what he calls "Matt's Lemon Pepper Italian Chicken of Goodness" last night and shares his recipe with me. Instead of writing it down, I opted to draw it out in hieroglyphics. There are four steps. Follow along with the picture.

  1. Take chicken breasts and put them on a plate. Stick it in the microwave for 15 minutes flipping after 7 minutes.
  2. Take a cake pan and fill it 3/8" high with water and then an equal amount of Italian dressing. Stir with a fork.
  3. Take chicken breast and slice down the center but not all the way through. Puncture chicken with a fork a couple times and add cut side down into the cake pan. Sprinkle lemon pepper seasoning on top.
  4. Cover and put in the oven at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

All this = GOOD.

My Photo In an Article!

French Fries
Originally uploaded by Jamie Howell
I was contacted through Flickr for permission to use one of my photos in an article. I was so excited. The message I received didn't say what photo but did mention it was something about junk food which I really didn't pay attention to. I'm thinking it must be the pictures of the castles I've seen or the pretty grounds at Punta Cana or something neat like that.

I follow the link... it's a picture of the Freedom Fries I took in France. The photo I took right before Grandma's wallet was lost/stolen and our Paris trip went to hell.

The article is "French obesity report calls for junk food tax." It looks like the entire site allows anyone to just post anything to it so it's not as neat as I originally thought but, eh. It's kind of cool to see my photo right there.

More Pictures from Dominican Republic

My mom has finished posting all her photos from Punta Cana to her flickr. You should go check them out! They went on an excursion to Santo Domingo while there and there's some really neat pictures of Columbus stuff that they saw.

Most interesting is they said Columbus never posed for a portrait so all pictures and statues of him is an artist's rendering and not actually what he looked like. I'm guessing he must of been an ugly fellow.

My pictures can be found by following this link to my flickr account.

Doodle Dog Bakery

We went to lunch with my parents and on the way home passed a little doggie store so we decided to stop in. It was the Doodle Dog Bakery in Flushing. They had toys and clothes and fancy dog treats. We got a little pizzas, BBQ squirrels, and little chocolate chip cookies to spoil our pups.

Wrought Iron Grill

We were going to go to see our friends in Detroit tonight but Dodge isn't feeling very well. Because I had no plans for dinner tonight, we decided to go try the Wrought Iron Grill. It's a new restaurant in town that has only been open for about a month and a half.

We really liked the atmosphere of the place immediately upon entering. When we sat Dodge commented, "I like this place" before even ordering any food.

We got the Mediterranean Platter for an appetizer. I love hummus and had to order it when seeing it on the list. The tabouli was ok although I had never had it before. The spicy feta dip though was fantastic and was my favorite on the plate. I also ordered a Dead Guy Ale to drink. It was pretty good but the bottle made it worth ordering.

For dinner we both ordered specials. The waitress told us each month one third of their menu will change to be more seasonal as well as having daily specials. I had a fettuccine with prosciutto and peas. It was absolutely delicious. Dodge ordered the prime rib and it was hugemongous and also very very good.

The place was a little more pricey compared to other restaurants in Owosso but it was also more upscale than most other places in Owosso. Was a great place for a date night and we will be back.

So much so that I ran out of the pool and straight at them when they announced pictures with a monkey. It explains why I look like I have no hair. It's all wet and slicked back from swimming.

Mom said she heard of the monkey biting someone and the handler's only reply was "Monkey no like you". Monkey was real good with me, though. Very trained. He sat on my hands waited for the flash of the camera and jumped back to the handler who put me it on my shoulder. Waited again for a flash and jumped back to the handler. Maybe I can trade on of the wieners in for a pet monkey...

Update

Neither myself or the roadside assistant man knew how to change the spare on a Mercedes. The spare in the trunk was deflated which we stared at dumbly for a bit. Then we pulled out the manual. The car says of has a toolkit but it took us several minutes of searching to find it.

The toolkit made me laugh as it came with everything. Compressor to inflate the tire, special lugnuts for the spare, flashlight, and little white gloves so you don't get your hands dirty.

Since we were now a team and not him paid to help me, he gave me the task of figuring out how to get the compressor working while he removed the old tire. I should of put on the little white gloves...

We got the tire on and since it has a max speed of 50mph I turned back towards Owosso to get a new tire put on. He said it was under warranty but I didn't have enough tread. Also my rim is a little bent so I might have some vibration. Great.

My Bad Luck

Today started out promising. I woke up on time. Finished some laundry. Folded some clothes. Made the grocery list. Even left for work early! As I'm driving, I feel the car pulling to the right. It wasn't too bad until I got out of town and up to speed. I thought my tires might be a bit low and planned to stop at the gas station on M-52 between Owosso and Perry. I no sooner make this decision than BOOM! My tire blows. So I've been stuck here for an hour now waiting for AAA to come assist me. I have such bad luck.

Eyeball Lunch

Here's the story on this. Every day at lunch time they came out and cooked on a big grill right on the beach so we didn't have to get redressed to have lunch. We could stay in our swimsuits and grab some lunch and go back to the beach or pool. Usually it was pretty typical grill food like ribs but this day it was some sort of seafood ... thing. Mom describes what is up with it in the video.

Dodge and dad get up and offer to get plates of whatever is being served for mom and I. They come back and put 3 plates of this in front of us each claiming "That's for you, girls". Dad said there was no way he was eating it and went to the buffet. Mom and I were wondering what possessed them to think we would want it, and 3 plates of it to boot!

I did try some. I ate some of the noodles and honestly they didn't taste bad. It just smelled too fishy and the shrimp staring at me caused me to chicken out and eat a hamburger from the buffet line instead. Dodge did eat his plate of food though! He didn't feel too swell later that evening. I blamed it on the eyeballs.
